Braithwaite village has an impressive backdrop of Lake District fells, the Coledale Horseshoe, a semicircle of Lakeland fells - a famous walking route which includes Grisedale Pike (2593ft), Grassmoor (2791ft) and Causey Pike . Barn House is ideally situated in the village for you to leave your car at the cottage and head straight from the door on foot.
(The pictures on the right of the page were taken within 1/2 mile of Braithwaite village).

Another area to explore is towards Newlands valley where there are a range of walks to suit all abilities. The picturesque country roads and paths provide flat level walking whilst heading towards Derwentwater takes you to the challenging Cat Bells, Maiden Moor and High Spy.

Braithwaite also sits at the foot of Whinlatter Forest, the last of England's mountain forests. There are a multitude of trails and paths for walkers and mountain bikers and there are tremendous views from the summit, Lord's Seat (1811ft). Whinlatter is also an excellent route for approaching Grisedale Pike. (There is also a good tea room, shop and information including the popular Osprey Centre).

A short drive round the back side of Derwentwater takes you through the village of Grange to Borrowdale valley. Borrowdale is famed for its Lakeland walks and climbs - Great Gable, Glaramara, Great End and Scafell Pike are but a few of the famous fells.

Because of our position in the area we can offer guests exclusive access to areas of private low land for walks which would suit those with disabilities aswell.
